"George Baker of Winchester passed away at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Jan. 16, 2006 following a 6 month battle with cancer. He was 60.
George was born on Oct. 31, 1945 in Winchester to the late Garfield Baker and the late Nancy Baker (nee Curry). He was the husband of Anne Baker (nee Loney) whom he married in Winchester United Church on Aug. 2, 1974. He was the father of David and Douglas, both at home. He was the brother of Beverley Baker (Hank Molenaar) of Winchester, and Bonny (Albert) Black of Osnabruck Centre. He was the uncle of Shawn Cumming of Cornwall.
George was a lifetime resident of Winchester. He worked for the past 25 years as a transport driver for Kriska Transport. George was an avid hunter - 24-7, 365 days a year there was a season for some type of wild game. If not, there was a fishing hole, horse pull, or auction sale to attend. He passed his love of the outdoors on to his boys. A man of few words, George could say a lot without saying anything at all. Anyone who ever received the Baker stare can attest to that. George was a good cook and he could be found in the cook shack of the Oddfellows Lodge or the kitchen of the Five Star Camp. He may not have told anyone that he loved them, but he meant it every day. George was loved and will be missed by all.
'Home is the sailor, home from the sea and the hunter home from the hill.'
Visitation was held at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Jan. 19. An Oddfellows Service was held on Jan. 19 at 8:30 pm. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Jan. 20 with Rev. Thurland Brown officiating. Interment followed at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville.
The pallbearers were Mac Holmes, Randy Holmes, Gary Hoy, Allen Whitteker, Edwin Baker, and Glen Irven. Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Pemberton, Graham Pemberton, Joe Banville, and Lyall Holmes.
Donations to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital or to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family."

"Bucks Bridge, Oct. 30 - Mrs. Charlotte Baker Hitsman passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zina Bellinger Friday morning, Oct. 30th at 9 o'clock. She was the wife of the late John Hitsman who passed away eight years ago. Mrs. Hitsman had been patient sufferer for a number of months at the home of her daughter Laura where she came to live a few years ago. Her suffering was great the last few days, but she bore it all without a murmur. She was an earnest Christian woman, always ready to do for others what her hands could find to do, always ready in time of sickness to lend a helping hand and had been heard to say when God wants me I am ready to go. His will be done. She was a mother who loved her children dearly and always loved to have them with her. She was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Laura, assisted by her other daughters who could come to help, but on bright noon God said come and she was laid at rest. She was born in Chrysler, Canada in 1844, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Baker. Coming to this side she was married to John Hitsman. To them were born ten children, eight daughters and two sons, all of whom survive her excepting one son, Frank, who passed away 21 years ago: Ella Gillespie of Seattle, Jane Ruport, Norfolk; Emma Hough, Madrid; Clara Bradley, Buck's Bridge; John of Poughkeepsie; Maggie Beswick, Springfield, Mass.; Nettie Wright of Kingston; Myrtle Joyce of Madrid, and Laura Bellinger with who she lived. She had 32 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, also three brothers survive her. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Sparling of Madrid, assisted by Rev. French. The Madrid M. E. choir rendered three selections. The bearers were her four sons-in-law. Interment was in the Scotch cemetery near Waddington.
A cheerful and happy family
Dwelt quiet and free from care,
But the angel stole in softly
And stood all silent there,
Then slowly the angel in silence
Struck home the mortal blow,
And in the calm bright morning
He laid our mother low.
Her place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled,
Her voice is still forever more
Her heart and hands are stilled.
Her hands are folded on her breast
We have kissed her marble brow,
And in our aching hearts we know
We have no mother now. "

"Summarizing the life history of Isabel, our mother, is no easy task- as she lived 93 wonderful years, and she was busy with the community and family she loved right to the end. Isabel was born in Cannamore, ON, the oldest of the family having two younger brothers, Doug and Mac.
Her parents were William Simpson Feeley and Janet Hunter. For her early education, Isabel attended the local school, and then after receiving her high school diploma, travelled to the Ottawa Normal School, becoming a qualified teacher. Her career took her to Almonte, and she did some private tutoring in Montreal.
Later, she met and married Willard Edmond Baker in the late 1930's, and moved to the family farm in the Melvin Settlement, where she raised her family, Doug, Don, and Catharine. When Willard retired in 1969, the farm was sold, and the couple moved to their new home on Main St. in Winchester. Although Willard died in 1972, Isabel was able to follow an active and happy life in this home for nearly 40 years.
During this time, Isabel found enjoyment in a second career at the K-Mart at Blossom Park in Ottawa for 14 years, where she managed the lamps and furniture department.
The following years she dedicated her time to her family and many friends at the Seniors and her church in Morewood. She enjoyed euchre, dancing, and loved to visit. Reading, crossword puzzles, and going through the local newspapers helped fill in the time. She had a flawless driving record, and helped many of her fellow seniors to pass the written drivers exam! Despite her advancing years, she was able to live independently in her own home, and despite being offered a place in the Beachcroft Seniors Residence she summarily refused to move anywhere in January!!
Her excellent memory allowed her to be a store-house of local history, a resource that will be difficult to replace.
Finally - Death at an advanced age is cause for those left to celebrate the gift of life, rather than a time of sadness.
I HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE....Isabel.
The funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Winchester/ Chesterville Funeral Home in Winchester."

Death of Mrs. M. Hillis Widely Mourned
The communities of Morewood and Cannamore were shocked to hear of the untimely death of Mrs. Milton Hillis, which occurred at the General Hospital, Cornwall on Wednesday evening, March 24.
Mrs. Hillis, formerly Miss Nellie Baker, was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Baker of Cannamore. She was a graduate of the Morewood High School and Ottawa Normal. She taught school for four years at North Winchester (S.S. No. 7), where her quiet manner and readiness to help in both church and social circles, won for her the respect and love of all.
In August, 1933, she was united in marriage to Milton Hillis, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hillis. They made their new home at Lunenburg, where they had many friends.
The body was first brought to Lunenburg, and from thence to her father's home in Cannamore. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church Morewood, of which the deceased was a member. The service was conducted by Dr. Thompson, assisted by Rev. A. Nimmo of Athelstan Que., a former pastor, and Rev. Kenneth Woodwark, of Lunenburg. The church was filled with sympathizing friends and Mrs. W. C. McQuaig sang "The Homeland". Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Hillis leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband and parents - one sister, Mrs. Ross Nurse of Cannamore, and four brothers, Willis, Gordon and Dalton at home, and Clifford of Elma.
Many floral offerings were sent carrying love and sympathy.
The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the near relatives, who mourn the loss of one so dearly loved."
