Elizabeth McCann Bolton
1881 Bastard census: Elizabeth Bolton, widow, age 58, born Ireland, Church of England
1901 Bastard census: Bolton Elisabeth, widow, born Apr 14 1821, 79 at last birthday
Henry and Elizabeth were born in Ireland (as per 1851 and other censuses), and they appear in the Bastard and Burgess censuses from 1851, 1861 and 1871. The 1851 census includes five Canadian-born children including Margaret, who was ten years old; hence born in Canada around 1841. However, we haven't yet found Henry Bolton in the 1842 Canada West Census. Elizabeth appears in the 1881 and 1901 census after Henry's death.

The Distinguished Service Cross with bars, second highest honour that the United States government can give for bravery and devotion to service has been given to Herbert C. Bolton of Pueblo. Bolton has also been decorated with the Purple heart for two wounds and has the silver stars with two bars for devotion to duty while under gunfire during World War I.
Bolton has the enviable record of spending a total of 147 days in no-man's land and in German territory in positions ahead of the American forces. He was a corporal in company C, Ninth Field Battalion, Signal Corps, which was the intelligence unit of the First American Army.
The citation for the distinguished service cross was for Bolton's extraordinary heroism in action during the Meuse_Argonne offensive in France, November 2nd and 5th 1918. The citation signed by C.A. Trott, chief-of-staff, reads: " During the Meuse-Argonna offensive, he (Bolton) while in charge of the telephone detachment attached to the 60th Infantry,at all times, under trying circumstances and severe fire, disregarded his personal safety, by always carrying the telephone equipment along with the assaulting waves of infantry and immediately establishing wire communication with the regional headquarters after the capture of new positions. " He swam the canal de L 'est with the telephone equipment on his back under severe machine gun and artillery fire, thereby establishing communication from east of the Meuse after the forced crossing thereof." Bolton recalls that after swimming the canal, he also swam the Meuse River, about half a mile beyond and first established communication from a shell hole on the river bank. Later he made his way with the telephone equipment through barbed wire entanglements to a vantage point on a hill where he was able to see the enemy lines and telephone back information to his own forces and which resulted in the terrific shelling that broke the enemy lines at that position. Although he made frequent trips into enemy territory, Bolton swam the canal and river in daylight while under direct gunfire.
He was injured several times and carries permanent injuries. He enlisted from Minnesota and served 18 of his 19 months overseas. Through an oversight he was one of the few men who was never sworn into service. After moving to Pueblo, Mr. Bolton became active in ex-service mens' organizations.
