The Jacklins immigrated to Canada around 1834 or 1836.

Mary Ann Smith was born about 1809 in England. Mary Anne was married three times. Her husbands were: 1. Thomas Jacklin (brother of Richard), 2. Richard Jacklin ( -1846), and 3. Denis Donovan (1811 - ). Mary Ann had two brothers, and a sister married to a Dales. Mary Ann died Feb 2, 1883 was buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Lombardy Feb. 4, 1883.

The following letter was probably written by Elijah Jacklin, son of Mary Ann and Richard Jacklin.

Perth, March 9th, 1906

Dear Brother and Sister:

Received your letter all right and very glad to hear from you.

Mother's Fathers' name was Samuel Smith. He was a soldier and served 21 years in India. Mother had two brothers and one sister.

We have never seen any of the friends from England except one cousin, Christopher Dales, Mother's sister's son. He came from England and was going to California, but we never heard from him again.

Father's fathers' name was Richard Jacklin. They lived at a place known at that time as Jacklin's Lane in Lincolnshire, England. Mother was married first to Thomas Jacklin, but he didn't live long and she was then married to his brother Richard Jacklin.

Thomas was Tom's father. The three boys Thomas, Joe and John were all born in England. In 1836 they came from England I think.

I don't know our Great Grandfather's name-Maria has no papers of Mother's. I went to see her but she has none.

I have seen all the friends and they are all well except Shel. He had pneumonia early in the Spring.

  1. Jeremiah A. Jacklin (1865-   )
Perth Courier, Jan. 14, 1887 - Jacklin-Campbell—Married, at Oliver’s Ferry, on the 3rd Jan., at the residence of the bride’s father, by Rev. N. Campbell, B.A., Mr. Jeremiah Jacklin, Lanark Village, to Miss Ida Victoria Campbell, eldest daughter of Mr. David Campbell.

Perth Courier, Jan. 11, 1889 - Jeremiah Jacklin, merchant tailor of Perth, has made an assignment of his affects to his landlord John McCann. He has been in business here for about 9 months.

The Winnipeg Free Press of the 6th August 1889 says that Jeremiah Jacklin, tailor and insurance agent who “levanted” from that city with a young woman named Scott has been heard from. The couple were married in Grand Forks, Dakota. Jacklin carried a tailor shop in Perth but made an assignment after a few months. His wife who is of a respectable parentage, is with her friends in North Elmsley. The Free Press says that his bogus wife Miss Scott is a native of Tennessee and was a tailoress in one of Winnipeg’s leading tailoring establishments when she met Jacklin. She had been warned that Jacklin was married but she refused to believe it.
