In 1928, John bought the parsonage across from the Methodist Church in Lombardy, after the minister's residence moved to Rideau Ferry. (Descendents occupied this house until the 1960s when it was demolished as part of an ill-fated highway improvement project.)

In 1928, assisted by Richard Strikefoot, he devised a snow plow that cleaned the Lombardy village sidewalks.
