James Weekes was the fifth child of Joseph Weekes and Jane Fullerton Weekes, who brought their family from Ireland some time around the year 1839 (about 1844 according to James' obiuary). James lived with Joseph and Jane on their farm near Port Elmsley, married Anna Smith (a girl from Glasgow) and acquired the farm from Jane in 1863 (selling it to Thomas Stone in 1882).

After Anna's death in 1897, James married Agnes McEwen (nee Lawford) in 1898. The mother of Agnes Weekes is Margaret Cameron, wife of Thomas Lawford. Agnes was the eldest of 12. She was from Scotland and Thomas emigrated to Canada West after being wounded at the Battle of Waterloo settling in Perth area. He farmed 100 acres. Margaret died in 1888.

Perth Courier, Aug 31, 1883
"At Port Elmsley, on 22nd Aug, by Rev J Mylne, Mr John McChesney, of Perth, to Miss Annie Weekes, sis of Jas Weekes, grocer, Carleton Place."

James' and Agnes' Marriage Registration

James and Anna had eleven or twelve children, who seem to have been an adventurous lot. Their firstborn, John, died at a young age in Montana. Their last child, William, spent many of his years in Saskatchewan. And several of the other children, including at least Alexander, Eva, Elizabeth and Charlotte lived in the area of Cobalt, Ontario during the mining boom years in that district.

The following letter to the editor of the Perth Courier of February 18, 1876, is in support of the Temperance Act of 1864. There must have been interesting family get-togethers, as Alexander successfully applied for a tavern license in the same township in at least 1870 and 1871.
