The Bolton (or Boulton) family arrived in Bastard and Burgess and neighboring townships in strong numbers in the first half of the 19th century. Several families arrived in a brief period of time. They may all have been related in Ireland as many came from County Wexford, but we don't have that connection information yet, so must assume that the various branches are independent of each other. Immigration records show "703.William Bolton, emigrant, 1 adult male, 1 adult female, 1 female over 7, country Ireland, ship Thomas, July 19, 1819, located Aug. 24, 1819 Bathurst C8 NE16."
In sorting out these many Boltons and Boultons, it appears that these are the major family groupings, for whom we so far have no interconnections:
Diane Haskins wrote a fine book on the buildings of Bastard and Burgess Townships (My Own Four Walls, 1985, ISBN 0-9691968-0-6), which covers a good deal of the early history of the Boltons, Gallaghers and Polks.
The details on the Bolton family are still emerging. If you have information or corrections to contribute, email us through the "Contact Us" button above.

Richard and Sarah Boltonand their seven children came to Canada from Ballycanew, near Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland. These Boltons are easily traced to the three Bolton brothers who obtained a land grant from Cromwell. Richard Bolton's family lived on a farm called Ballyduff, about 2 miles from Ballycanew. The Boltons are recorded in the church records at St. Mogues, Church of Ireland. Boltons can be traced back to Wales, and to soldiers of the army of William the Conqueror. The earliest known Bolton was from Normandy, France. Richard and Sarah had lived through the 1798 Irish rebellion before they arrived in the Portland area in 1831. Son Henry F's father in law William Singleton bought the land on Lot 22, Con II in Bastard Twp. in 1831. This land was eventually the site of Henry and Ann's stone house in 1854. By 1844, son John F Bolton and Mary Hanna had settled on a farm on the banks of Rideau Lake, the western half of Lot 24, Con. I in South Burgess Twp. From The Singleton Family Record of J. Milton Singleton - "It would appear that three Singleton Brothers came from Ireland around 1817 or before. We know that many settlers came to Ontario following the Napoleonic Wars and received grants of land and other aids from the British Government. Among these settlers we believe that the Singletons could be included. These three brothers were, (1) William and (2) Richard and (3) Thomas. Apparently William and Richard settled in the vicinity of Lyndhurst while Thomas settled in vicinity of Singletons' Corners, (Crosby). ... The three Singleton men were married in Ireland." |

Samuel Boltonwho arrived in Bathurst from the USA. We received information about the Samuel Bolton lines from one of the Bolton descendents. Click here for details. Note his cautions about the details that are based on speculation. If you have information to offer or can validate any of the details please Contact Us. Samuel Boulton, born 1785 at Broadalbin, New York, USA, to unknown parents, married, in 1810, Rachel Persell born 24 July 1789 at Broadalbin, daughter of Jacob Persell and Rachel Knapp. (IGI) A Samuel Boulton, with wife and at least some of children, probably arrived in Bathurst Township, Lanark County, Ontario in the 1820s or 1830s. Samuel seems to have been joining relatives (brothers/cousins?) William, Benjamin, Israel, Jacob and Hugh, who had arrived in Bathurst Township between 1814 and about 1825. Hugh Boulton was married to Susannah Persell (possibly a sister to Samuel’s wife Rachel Persell). If these Boultons were all from Broadalbin, NY, they may have been UELs. These Boultons settled at or near what is now the village of Fallbrook, then known as Boulton's Mills due to a grist mill and saw mill built there by William Boulton on Boulton's Creek which joins the Fall River at this point. |

The James Boulton Family of PerthJames Boulton was the first lawyer in Perth, arriving in 1823 from Toronto, where he grew up as the child of a Family Compact father. When in 1833 William Lyon Mackenzie drew up his list of the “family compact,” he began with the name D'Arcy Boulton. Next followed Boulton's four sons, like their father office holders all, then one son's brother-in-law, and finally the brother-in-law's brothers. James' father, the Honourable Henry John Boulton was Attorney General of Upper Canada at York. James's uncle was D'Arcy Boulton Jr., whose Toronto residence was the Grange. His cousin was William Henry Boulton, who among other things was mayor of Toronto from 1845-1847. James built Boulton House on Drummond St. in Perth in 1823, one of the two most pretentious brick residences of that day on the Sand Hill overlooking the River Tay. He left Perth and returned to Toronto in 1833. |

The Hugh Bolton and Mary Richey FamilyHugh Bolton, son of a Leeds County settler, was a Carleton Place founder as the first local mill operator. The village, sometimes known as Morphy's Mills or Boulton's Mills, grew with the establishment of his grist mill in 1823. He soon added an oatmeal mill. Both were held by him and then his son Hugh until the 1860s. Hugh Bolton was taken prisoner by drunken rioters during the Ballygiblin riots of 1824. |

"
In memory of Richard Bolton
died Aug 2? 1861? (t.s. broken)[mis-transcription] "
This Richard Bolton was born baptized 10 Oct 1796, per records of the St Iberius parish, Church of Ireland, in County Wexford, Ireland, son of Richard and Elizabeth BOLTON (his mother was Elizabeth Allen, daughter of Robert Allen and Hannah Nunn). Richard Bolton b 10 Oct 1796 owned Ballyduff in the Barony of Ballaghkeen, in County Wexford, Ireland; and returned briefly to Ireland for the estate sale in 1860. His ancestors are identified in the land records (deeds and estate papers supported by church records and various other existing records).
The immigrant’s father, Richard Bolton who married Elizabeth Allen 3 Dec 1795, made his will in 1791, per the marriage settlement made in Nov 1795 and registered in 1803.
This Richard Bolton was son of Richard Bolton born abt 1698, who was son of Richard Bolton with wife Grace who first purchased land in County Wexford, Ireland in 1702 (Kilpatrick), and purchased Ballyduff in 1705.
Richard Bolton with wife Grace left land to four sons: Edward (eldest son and heir, whose university records indicate he was born about 1696), Richard Jr who inherited Ballyduff; William, and Henry Bolton. There also appears to be a daughter Anne who married George Annesley in 1731.
It is proven that there were three men surnamed BOLTON who purchased land in County Wexford, Ireland about the same time (about 1700). They were obviously related to each other, but the exact relationship is unknown. They were: Richard Bolton (wife Grace), William Bolton, and Henry Bolton. Some printed publications confuse some of the descendants of these three men.
In this collection we have one descendant of this Richard Bolton family: Hugh Bolton born abt 1765 in County Wexford, md to Alice Sunderland. He appears to be the son of Hugh Bolton born about 1731 and grandson of Richard Bolton born about 1698, referenced above. One of the descendants of Hugh Bolton moved to Detroit, Michigan USA.
One of the sons of Richard Bolton (1796-1876) who immigrated to Ontario about 1840, settled in Iowa USA: William Henry Bolton (1841-1930). This is my ancestral family: my mother Besse Luella Bolton, was granddaughter to this William Henry Bolton.
